Company Overview

Kotura is ISO 9001:2008 certified and has been in volume production of silicon photonics ICs since 2006. Almost one billion in-service device hours attest to the quality and reliability of our products. With one of the largest, dedicated R&D teams in one location, Kotura’s technology focus on silicon photonics and associated fabrication technologies, combined with electronics, packaging, product development, and low-cost manufacturing uniquely positions Kotura to optimally develop integrated optoelectronic solutions that provide increased processing speed, reduced heat and energy consumption, and lower costs.

Our in-house fab provides quick turn-around-time on new designs and fast ramp-up in production. Our fab-lite strategy ensures that our designs can easily transfer to large, commercial fabs when the volumes demand. Kotura’s headquarters and fab are located in Monterey Park, California. Kotura also has an office located in Shenzhen, China.

Markets and Products

Kotura designs, manufactures and markets application specific silicon photonics circuits. Kotura’s unique technology platform integrates a broad range of optical and optoelectronic functionality to provide innovative application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) solutions for applications ranging from data center interconnect to high performance computing and telecommunications.

In the data center, we make higher density switches and routers possible. By integrating multiple functions on a single chip, we scale networking pipes from the 10 Gb/s pipes of today to 40 Gb/s, 100 Gb/s or even Terabit/s pipes of tomorrow. Integrating wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) on the chip reduces the optical cabling cost by a factor of 10 or more. Silicon photonics enables low power designs, which reduces heat, and allows for more compact design. We envision 100 Gb/s and even Terabit/s transceivers, operating on a few watts, fitting in a form factor the size of an USB flash drive.

High performance computing has many of the same requirements as data centers: both need 100 Gb/s pipes that can scale to one Terabits per second at low-power and small size. An additional need of high performance computing is the option to have on-board engines in addition to rack mounted transceivers. On-board engines allow the optical fabric to connect directly to CPU hub chips anywhere on the board. Power is reduced by eliminating long high-speed electrical traces; space is optimized because the fiber can be on top of other electrical components; and the increased bandwidth improves the performance of the super computer.

In telecommunications, Kotura products enable new networking features that expand the performance and reduce the cost of Metro, Access and Long Haul networks. Our products reduce the transients and increase the performance of coherent receivers; they enable wavelength tracking in Metro networks; and, they allow for cost-effective power control in ROADMs.

Technology

With a rich portfolio and a world-class R&D team, Kotura is both a leader and a catalyst for the deployment of silicon photonics in a broad range of applications. Our focus has been in the development of a platform that can enable new and innovative solutions based on silicon photonics.

Our wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) provides distinct advantages enabling high-performance, high-bandwidth silicon-based optical interconnects in an ultra-small footprint. Kotura’s unique technology platform integrates optics and electronics to refine optical networking, applying photons where electrons are currently used, and developing ASICs that provide a bridge to the next generation of connectivity.
